  • Movie draws public - and pirates
    - 22 June 2009

South Africa’s new comedy film White Wedding has been such an unexpected hit on local screens it has already attracted the interest of DVD pirates – but the film-makers are fighting back.

Six weeks after its launch, White Wedding – best described as a road-and-buddy movie – is still on the local cinema circuit, drawing record numbers of viewers and competing strongly with Hollywood blockbusters produced with budgets hundreds of times more.

  • Bride, groom and story that united a nation

Terminator Salvation and other stapleHollywood blockbusters are facing an unlikely rival at South Africa's multiplex cinemas.

White Wedding is a romantic comedy that took 19 days to shoot on a budget of 6m rand (£450,000), yet in less than two months it has become one of South Africa's most successful films. It also appears to be succeeding where so many politicians have failed – by making people feel good about themselves.

  • PHENOMENAL OPENING WEEKEND BOX OFFICE FOR
    “WHITE WEDDING.”

WHITE WEDDING, the locally produced road-movie-rom-com banked its first R1million on opening weekend.

The film grossed over R1.1 million at the Box Office this past weekend when it released on circuit in South-Africa. These results are in line with the opening weekend performance of the smash hit SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE ’s  gross earnings on its opening weekend in March this year. WHITE WEDDING has garnered 48 000 attendances since its release on Wednesday 29 April, and outperformed X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE at sites like Ster-Kinekor Maponya Mall, Sterland, Savannah Mall, Southgate and The Wheel amongst others.

We’ve watched every kind of local audience watching our movie, and what every screening has had in common are the smiles on people’s faces when they leave the theatre. I am elated with the way SA audiences have received the film.’ said director Jann Turner in response to the unprecedented performance of the film to date.
Writer-producer-actor, Kenneth Nkosi concurs: ‘South Africans are sending us a message, they want to see themselves and laugh at themselves on the big screen.’

WHITE WEDDING sold three times more tickets than the hit gangster movie JERUSALEMA did on its opening weekend, and twice as many tickets as Academy Award Winner TSOTSI did at the time of its release.  WHITE WEDDING’s opening weekend gross is comparable to the Martin Lawrence in COLLEGE ROAD TRIP. The film also sold 3% more tickets than Tyler Perry’s WHY DID I GET MARRIED sold on opening weekend.

Says Helen Kuun of Ster-Kinekor Distribution: ‘Both Kenneth and Rapulana have starred or featured in many successful local feature films in recent years (Max and Mona, Hijack Stories, Jerusalema, Tsotsi) and subsequently have built up a big-screen fanbase. WHITE WEDDING’s results illustrates that local star-power can bring people to cinemas in equal numbers to those that US star-driven films do.’

WHITE WEDDING stars Kenneth Nkosi and Rapulana Seiphemo who also co-wrote an co-produced the film with director Jann Turner. The film was released by Ster-Kinekor Distribution and is playing in cinemas nationwide.

    The critics said:

White Wedding a brilliantly hilarious South African film.” The Sowetan

White Wedding does not patronise, pander or preach as the film finds humour and hope in our diversity “   Business Day Weekender

“Filled with first rate acting and some uncomfortable truths about how we deal with each other this road-trip movie surprises and delights “   Theresa Smith - Tonight

I would be surprised if this year brings us a better South African movie than White Wedding”   Barry Ronge

“I would be surprised if this year brings us a better South African movie than White Wedding.”
-The Sunday Times RSA

“After years in which race relations have been discussed only with deadly earnestness and self-flagellation, the film lightly sends up stereotypes and prejudices in ways that few South Africans have dared before.”

-The Guardian (UK)

“For a country still struggling to define what it means to be African, this clash between European and African traditions is one of the central issues of life, one that effects the way one votes, worships, eats and relates to one’s fellow citizens and it makes for great comedic material . Black friends who have seen this film have universally loved it. Some white friends are amazed that a non –South African could enjoy such a film, especially with its’ subtitles in Xhosa, Zulu and Afrikaans. But others see it as a welcome chance to release the daily tension of racial politics with a bit of laughter. ”
